چکیده

background: th e eff ects of chronic valproic acid administration on bone health have been a matter of concern and controversy.in this study, the bone status following valproate intake was assessed by using several bone-related biochemical markers. materials and methods: in this case-control study, 62 epileptic patients and 40 age- and gender-matched controls were enrolled. the patients had been under chronic valproate therapy (758 ± 29 mg/day) for at least the past 6 months, without any vitamin d/or calcium supplementation. serum markers of bone turnover (carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type i collagen (ctx) and bone-specifi c alkaline phosphatase [balp]), calcium, phosphorus, total alkaline phosphatase, and parathyroid hormone levels were measured in both groups. results: the markers of bone turnover as well as other measured bone biochemical parameters did not statistically differ between the two groups. conclusion: valproate therapy at the mentioned doses does not seem to change bone turnover in adult epileptic patients.

Bone density and bone turnover markers in patients with epilepsy on chronic antiepileptic drug therapy.

In this comparative, cross-sectional study, we evaluated 55 patients with epilepsy on chronic use of antiepileptic drugs (AED); [(38 females and 17 males, 35 +/- 6 years (25 to 47)] and compared to 24 healthy subjects (17 females/7 males). Laboratorial evaluation of bone and mineral metabolism including measurements of bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) and carboxyterminal telopeptide of...

Markers of bone turnover in haemodialysis patients.

patients with myeloma is likely to be increased because myeloma-associated with a bleeding diathesis (as the authors note). Indeed, the largest and most recent trial of plasmapheresis for myeloma-associated kidney failure did not specify kidney biopsy as an inclusion criterion because of concerns about the risks vs benefits of the procedure [2]. Can the authors specify how a biopsy result will—...

Bone turnover markers.

Bones are constantly remodelled to cope with the body's calcium requirements and to repair microscopic damage. The entire skeleton is replaced every 10 years in adults, and around 10% of the skeleton is involved in bone remodelling at any one time.

Bone turnover markers in patients with type 1 Gaucher disease

Bone complications occur frequently in Gaucher disease (GD) and reduce the quality of life of these patients. Skeletal involvement is an important indication for treatment to ameliorate symptoms and reduce the risk of irreversible and debilitating disease. Bone biomarkers have been used to assess disease status and the response to therapy in a number of bone disorders. Here, we examine the lite...

Biochemical bone turnover markers: significance in patients with osteoporosis.

UNLABELLED Osteoporosis is a systemic disease, which is characterized by reduced bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of the bone tissue, resulting in an increased risk of fracture. Since osteoporosis is today a disease with high incidence rate, the aim of this study was to determine a correlation between bone mass density (BMD) and concentration of biochemical bone turnover markers--...
